Now $130 PC Due In April 2007
The $100 PC has received a bit of inflation, now expected to sell for $130. Remember this laptop/tablet convertible unit will be sold in 3rd world countries, directly to governments and large organizations. Nicholas Negroponte recently showed off the latest prototype.
The unit weights 2 pounds, runs on Linux, can convert to a tablet, will have a anti-reflective screen so it can be read outdoors, and built in USB ports, RAM, etc.
Negroponte expects to reach the $100 price point by the end of 2008. Pricing depends on how much RAM, but key is the display, he added. “It has to be sunlight readable. That won’t be done until August/September.” Nigeria, Brazil, Thailand and Argentina are currently testing the units.
In addition, China, India and Egypt have shown interest, as well as Russia, Mexico and Indonesia. Negroponte said that manufacturing has to reach 5 to 6 million to get scale pricing.
